Lap Band Procedure

During a LAP-BAND® procedure, the band is placed around the upper stomach creating a new, tiny stomach pouch. As a result, patients experience an earlier sensation of fullness and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food. There is no cutting, stapling, of the stomach or rerouting of the bowel involved in the adjustable gastric band procedure. It is the least traumatic of all weight loss surgeries.

The surgeon makes several tiny incisions and uses long, slender instruments to implant the device. By avoiding the large incision of open surgery, patients generally experience less pain and scarring. In addition, the hospital stay is less than 24 hours.  Most patients return home the same day. Patients typically resume normal activities within a week, which is much quicker than other surgical alternatives.

The procedure uses an adjustable silicone band connected by a catheter to an access port placed on the abdominal wall under the skin. The port allows the surgeon to adjust the size of the band.  By adding or removing saline to the inner surface of the band, the amount and consumption rate of food can be controlled.

Patients with certain medical conditions (such as Crohn's or Lupus) may not be candidates for the Lap-Band procedure. Please call our office at 913-814-SLIM (7546) or toll-free at 1-800-777-6812 to talk with our trained medical professionals.
