I’m on full liquid diet right now. Should I be keeping portion sizes of soup, tea and coffee down to 1/2 cup? I wasn’t feeling satisfied when my meal was only 1/2 cup of soup, but if it’s a matter of not stretching out the band or something, I’ll definitely just live with it.

Grace,
I slowly found that I increased my portion size to about a cup per serving as I progressed to pureed foods and beyond. There are a couple of things that I kept telling myself during this time.

1. Stop eating when I begin to start feeling full.
2. This is not the time to lose weight, just time for my body to heal.

If you remember those two things then I’m sure you will be fine. I don’t think you will stretch the band by going to a cup of soup. As I was told by another bandster, if you follow the diet and do your best then you will be fine in the long run. Good luck!!

I’ve heard that, and I’m sticking to all the rules. But I don’t understand how a person could NOT lose weight if a meal = 1/2 cup to 1 cup of liquid or pureed non-fatty food. For the first week, my average calorie count was probably about 500 calories/day and I lost 7 pounds. Since going to pureed food, I might be up to 750 calories/day, but I’m still losing weight ... as I would assume anyone would. Do they actually have people that stay the same weight or gain in this first week? I don’t see how you could.

Our bodies go thru a huge shock in regards to the surgery.  Most people do lose weight while on the liquid diet, which is absolutely fine and normal.  The issue is that people should not focus on trying to lose weight at this point by purposely limiting their caloric intake.  Some people are so gung ho to lose the weight that they don’t allow their body the time it needs to heal.  While I can understand this, the weight didn’t go on overnight and there is no need for it to come off overnight.  We are losing weight so as to have healthier bodies and this begins with allowing our body the time it needs to heal.  Don’t be alarmed if you do or do not lose weight while on the liquid diet, just relax and know that you are on your way to a healthier you.

You are right, it would be hard to not lose weight when you have dropped your caloric intake so much. But as Smiley said, the key is to not focus on losing weight but focus on your body healing. If that means you eat 2 cups of food then so be it. Although, it is better to try and stick to the guidelines it is just as important to keep your body healthy right now.

Hey everyone tomorrow is Independence Clinic support group meeting and i just wanted to put out a reminder. The topic will be “Portion Control” but like normal the open forum is the juicy part of the meeting. Hope to see you there. The door price will be small dishes to help make good portion decisions.
