I had the lap band put in I believe two years ago. I went to my appointments four hours away after awhile however I quit going after a year was up. I didn’t have the money to go back. I have done terrible with losing weight on my own and I have only lost a total of 10 pounds since the surgery . I want to get back into going to appointments and getting help, plus I have the cash now. Will I be able to make appointments again or am I a done deal? I am so embarrassed that I have not lost the weight like I should have . What should I do?

Your success isn’t just about the number on a scale. Sometimes you can measure it in comments from friends or family, accomplishing new activities or wearing something you never thought you could.

What are your recent Non-Scale Victories?

Liquid diet hints

Just had another fill after not having had one for a few months, so I’m back on the drill going from clear liquid diet, full liquid etc. etc.

Had two innovations to share, and I’d like to hear anyone else’s tips on making things easier—the liquid diet days are kind of a drag.

* Good protein fix—Nectar protein powder comes in a lemonade that you can mix up in water and sip. Good news: (1) a quick way to get 23 grams of protein for only 90 calories, (2) It’s one of the most natural protein powders. Bad news: (1) about $36/container—pricey, like all protein powders, (2) has a bit of a funny taste. (BTW, the Nectar chocolate powder that you mix up with milk is REALLY good-tasting, when you graduate to full liquid.)

* Better-tasting chicken broth—I tried a lot of different chicken broths and bouillons, but they tend to be very watery and low on flavor. So this time, I bought a family-sized can of Campbell’s chicken noodle soup, separated out the noodles and chicken and heated that up. Yes, it’s got a little more fat in it than chicken stock, but the low calorie count on clear liquid diet days doesn’t make that much of a problem. It’s much more satisfying to make a meal of, and you can hold onto the noodles and chicken to have in a couple days when you need mushy food.

Cheers!
Grace

You Know You Are A Bandster When . . .

Here is another fun one similar to the Non-Scale Victories post. What are some of the things that have happened to you along the way that make you say “Yup, I am banded and it is working.” Here are a few of mine.

You know you are a bandster when:

1. You wish you had bought some of your favorite clothes in various sizes because once you go down a size it is horrible trying to find something similar and don’t even think about finding the same thing.

2. The waitress brings you your order and you immediately know how many meals you will get out of it.

3. You thank the person that just bought you a meal for not only that meal, but also for lunch and dinner the next day.

4. You keep a ziplock baggie in your car for one of those emergency moments.

Okay - your turn.

I have missed my buddies on here. My computer crashed a few months ago, but I am up and running once again with a new one.

How is everyone doing?

I see that a lot of the posts have been viewed, but few have been responded to. We are glad to have “lurkers” because that is how many of us educated ourselves about the band, but please feel free to post questions you have as a new post or to respond to someone else’s post. Two brains are better than one and your brain counts.

I was told I would have surgery within the next two weeks based on the bloodwork drawn, etc. Great. But, should I be doing something now to prepare? Everyone keeps talking about shakes, protein shakes. Should I be doing these now or eating regularly? I need some guidance. Please share your preop experiences.
Weight GAIN in the first month—HELP!

Okay, I know I’ve heard that the time between the surgery and the first adjustment isn’t about losing weight, but I still want to know what people’s experiences have been. I started out losing 1-2 pounds a day! Then in the last week that abruptly stopped. Then yesterday I gained two pounds in one day! This, on a day when as far as I can tell I did everything right, (only took in about 1,000 calories and did some walking as I’ve been doing every day). Obviously, this is a little depressing.

What have others experienced? Is this kind of thing normal, or should I worry that I’m not doing something right? (BTW, I should mention that my net weight loss is still good—I’ve lost 13 pounds in 2 1/2 weeks. It’s just this plateau and today’s uptick that worried me.)

I hate to hit the panic button, but I didn’t do all this so I could gain weight. Help!

I just published a story to our blog (http://blog.moreoflife.com/Blog/bid/36494/Gastric-Band-Blog-Post-A-word-from-my-wife) about one of our patients and his wife’s story of watching him go through surgery and the first few days after surgery, and I thought this might be an interesting opportunity to share your tips on how you and your loved ones support each other while you go through an important life change like this.
