Those of us with extra weight often don't like yard work because it usually occurs in the heat of summer, but during the autumn, you can start to get your lawn and yourself into shape for next year.
1. Rake - If you have a lot of trees, this could be a weekly activity, and it involves several muscle groups.
2. Fertilize - There are a lot of good commercial winterizers on the market if you're okay with chemical fertilizers on your lawn. Some even contain weed preventers. Sure, you could use the old push spreader, but why not spend a few bucks and get one of the hand-held spreaders? It's a little more work, but if you have a big enough yard, it could burn quite a few calories.
3. Aerate - Remeber that we're in this for the excercise, so skip the riding lawn mower attachement and buy a manual core aerator. They require you to walk every square foot of the yard, with a gentle stomping action, and they can cause you to really break a sweat.
4. Mulch - Applying mulch requires a fair bit of raking, but if you really want to give yourself a workout, drop the bags off at the end of your driveway to make yourself carry each bag to its final destination. Your garden will thank you in the spring.
5. Plant - You can find some really good deals on bulbs this time of year, and at stores like Costco, you can find bags of 100 or more. That's a lot of digging and planting, and your yard will have an amazing display in about six months.
Fall's a great time to get outdoors and break a sweat without feeling overheated. Do you have your own ideas to add? Share them in the comments!
