Women who are considering having children may want to take note of the news this week regarding weight loss surgery and the health of children they have after surgery.
Don't worry, the news is good.
A study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that losing weight, either through traditional methods or surgical methods, could reduce the risk of your offspring developing obesity and improve their heart health.
The researcher even suggested that the interuteran environment may be more important than genes or environment after birth when it comes to preventing childhood obesity.
The study followed women who had children before and after their weight-loss surgery and found that children born after surgery had lower birth weight and smaller waists and were three times less likely to become severely obese than the children born before the surgery. Post-surgical children also had reduced insulin resistance and lower cholesterol.
It looks like having weight loss surgery before pregnancy could help your family break the cycle of obesity.
