Big John Daly is a big-time professional golfer, but he's not as big as he used to be thanks to a LAP-BAND® surgery. Daily had always struggled with his weight and had reportedly refused to participate in the formal British Open Championships Dinner, saying "you can't get this fat boy into a suit."
"I had to do something about my weight, and I did it the right way, the safe way," Daly said in a recent interview with GolfDigest.com.
For 1991 PGA Champion Daly, a six-month suspension provided the time he needed to get an adjustable gastric band to help him lose weight and prepare for a potential comeback in 2009.
Daly says that he lost the weight without using gym equipment, instead focusing on the long walks involved in golf to provide excercise.
"I'm way ahead of where I thought I would be," Daly continued, "and I'm starting to get some confidence back. The fire is still there. Even when I've been out of it over here, not in contention, I'm grinding, working on things. People have accused me of giving up, mailing it in. But I'm a fighter. I'm trying, and I want to be competitive. I've still got a good feel for the game. Before Memphis, I'm gonna try qualifying for the U.S. Open."
