Losing weight through the Holidays - Six Ways

Saturday October 10 2009

If you're at all like me, then a trip through the store from now through the end of the year is a dangerous proposition, with all kinds of tempting seasonal treats and Reeces Peanut Butter Cups taking on new forms from turkeys to trees. How can a person lose weight between now and the new year with all the temptation obstacles between now and then?

1. Celebrate in moderation. Don't torture yourself on the special days. Sample everything you want to taste, but don't pig out on anything. The next day, however, get back to business as usual and follow your rules of portion control and content.

2. Celebrate somewhere else. If you can arrange your family events at a restaurant or someone else's house, there will be fewer leftovers in your fridge, and less temptation for you to extend the celebration through a week of re-heated goodies.

3. Create your shopping list before visiting the store. When I want to behave, I use the Ultimatest Grocery List, which is a downloadable form arranged by grocery store sections, so you can check only the items you need and reduce your unhealthy impulse purchases.

4. Eat before the party. If you're headed out to an event where you will surely confront all kinds of tasty snacks, eat a filling, healthy meal before you attend. Focus on protein first, and then on vegetables. You can still enjoy sampling some of the hors d'oeuvres without being tempted to overdo it.

5. Set a good example. Even if you try to keep the celebrations away from your home, you probably find yourself preparing unhealthy items for other people all the time, too. For Halloween, give out an active toy, like bouncy expletive. Instead of bringing a dessert to a potluck function, bring a relish tray. Maybe you might start a new healthy trend in your social circles.

6. Stay active. It's so tempting to curl up by the warm glow of the TV all winter long, but there are still a lot of opportunities to keep active when it's cold out. Do your spring cleaning early. Shovel show early and often. Plan a corn maze or pumpkin patch walk. Turn your annual Christmas party into a neighborhood caroling walk.

Remember that with a little planning, you can be creative and make your holidays even more memorable and special while still being healthy. And you'll be ahead of everyone else on those new years' resolutions.
