Five myths standing between you and a better life

Friday July 24 2009

1. You haven’t tried hard enough – Most of our patients have tried every diet, exercise program or supplement in the book. Unfortunately, most of those attempts eventually fail, and people get discouraged and fall into old habits until they’re ready to try again.

2. You just need to eat better and exercise – Eating right and exercise are very important elements of weight control, but morbid or severe obesity is much more complicated. Genetics, social and environmental factors, psychological factors and injury can all contribute to weight gain.

3. Surgery is dangerous – An adjustable gastric band surgery is the safest weight-loss surgery method available. There are risks with any surgery, but a lot of people confuse gastric banding with other gastric surgeries. Weight Loss Surgical Center does not perform bypass – only adjustable gastric bands.

4. You’re taking the easy way out – Is anybody’s life really all that easy? A gastric band patient still has to exercise and eat right, and they also have to learn how to work with the band to get the feeling of fullness. Another thing to consider: are other surgeries considered the easy ways out of other medical conditions?

5. You’ll lose weight too fast / You’ll put it all back on later – At Weight Loss Surgical Center, we work with our patients toward the goal of losing 1-2 lbs per week. This is a slower weight loss than with gastric bypass, and the great thing about an adjustable gastric band is it is adjustable. If you start putting weight on, you can always get it filled, years or even decades after surgery.

Please—Is there anyone out there who has gotten through the system without 6 months of additional dieting under a physician’s care, even though the insurance has stated this is needed? Don’t they understand how many diets we have been on and how we don’t lose or we gain it back. How many hoops do we have to jump through? I am afraid that I will have something major happen while I am going through 6 more months of what is a stalling tactic.

anmom: I’ve posted your question in the community forum under the “Getting Started” topic. You can follow this link directly to the conversation: http://www.moreoflife.com/forum/viewthread/94/

The feedback I have recieved from our insurance specialists is that requirements like these are difficult, if not impossible, to get around. It could be argued that they use the 6 month period to ensure you are committed to change before they invest in your surgery.

However, if you view it as a stalling tactic, use that to your advantage. If you believe they do this so that you’ll give up and go away, use that as motivation to prove them wrong.
