Can weight loss surgery cut your cancer risk?

Monday July 27 2009

According to a new report in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, women who lost weight with weight loss surgery saw a reduction in cancer risks normally associated with obesity.

The study followed 1482 severely obese patients who had bariatric surgeries and compared them with similar women who had not had a bariatric procedure.

The group of women who had surgery had lower occurances of cancer diagnoses at 3.6 percent compared to the 5.8 percent diagnosis rate for women who were obese but did not have surgery.

Obese women are at risk for a variety of cancers, including breast, uterus, colorectal and gynecological cancers. The study suggests there may be a correlation between losing weight with bariatric surgery and lowered cancer risk, but more detailed studies would need to occur to prove a substantial link.
