Adjustable Gastric Bands and High Blood Pressure

Thursday June 04 2009

Studies show that losing weight with an adjustable gastric band can signficantly improve high blood pressure (hypertension), even before patients reach their goal weights.

Researchers at the New York University School of Medicine followed a group of gastric band patients over two years to determine at what point weight loss could improve certain medical conditions. The study showed that 81.8 percent of patients who had lost 40 to 50 percent of their excess weight had brought down their blood pressure.

The study showed that even smaller weight loss results -- as low as 30 lbs -- could produce similar health benefits for some, but the study's co-author suggested that most people cannot maintain that weight loss over a lifetime without weight loss surgery.

And when the weight returns, so do the health problems.

The study showed health issues including blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and high cholesteral were all dramatically improved by weight loss with a gastric band.

From what I understand it is very important to stay in touch with your PCP or heart doctor while you are losing weight so that if needed an adjustment can be made to your blood pressure medication.  I heard a doctor say the other day that having blood pressure that is too low is just as dangerous as having blood pressure that is too high.  So, make sure you know the symptoms of low blood pressure and contact your doctor if you notice that something just isn’t right.
